Luso-Brazilian Studies

Coordinator: David Cranmer

The Luso-Brazilian Studies theme involves all the research groups of CESEM whose research themes focus on aspects of music and musicians in Portugal and Brazil, and their interaction. It is based on two central pillars, through which it develops its activities: the Caravelas – Center for Studies in the History of Luso-Brazilian Music, founded at CESEM in 2008, which, through various resources and initiatives, fosters collaboration between musicologists who work in this area – in Portugal and Brazil, but also in other countries (see www.caravelas.com.pt); the Thematic History of Music in Portugal and Brazil, currently in the starting phase.

Although this line operates informally within CESEM, the formal structures and activities of its two pillars intrinsically impose scientific rigor and effective modes of operation.
