NEMI – Center for Studies in Music in the News

NEMI is a study group that includes members and collaborators of CESEM (Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music) whose works focuses music criticism, music chronicles and other types of texts about music published in the Portuguese periodical press from the 19th, 20th and 21st century, or that use that kind of documents in the course of their researches. As a work group, NEMI as the purpose to promote the meeting between scholars and the change of ideas and perspectives about the discourses and the presence of music in the periodical press.

Among the issues NEMI proposes to approach are:

  • The comprehension of the place of music in the political, cultural, literary and artistic press;
  • The survey and study of the theatrical and musical press published in Portugal from the 19th century to the present day;
  • A reflection on the mediums of publication of texts and news about music;
  • To increase the knowledge about the people that were involved in the periodical press, from editors and director of newspapers, to music critics and other writers and contributors;
  • To focus the networks of sociability and power between the agents involved (newspapers, critics, composers, musicians and institutions);
  • To study models of music criticism and music chronicles;
  • To analyse the discourses about music in the periodical press, the critical reception of music works, composers and musicians, as well as the disseminations of ideas and ideologies and of musical practices.

In this way, NEMI has the purpose to contribute to a better understanding of the presence and importance of texts about music in the periodical press in Portugal from an interdisciplinary point of view about the subject that encloses the history of music, sociology of music, general history, journalism and analysis of discourse.

NEMI is part of SociMus – Advanced Studies in the Sociology of Music, from CESEM, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University.
