One of the most important and influential composers of the second half of the 20 th century Luigi Nono was a musician of multifaceted interests, restricting himself not only to music and allowing for an artistic personality that went far beyond that of being merely a composer. Luigi Nono was able to develop a conception of art in which aesthetics and politics worked together, in which engaged art and abstract art where not at odds with each other, and in which the independence of artefacts and their social usefulness could coexist at the same time. As Helmut Lachenmann stated in 1973, referring to Luigi Nono’s work: “There is no credible music without lucid compositional techniques, but there is no lucid act of composing without a responsible ethos that goes far beyond music making, an attitude that requires a will towards such an ethos with full existential commitment.” An artist of vast culture and an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, Luigi Nono was permanently open to other cultures, disciplines and areas of thought. In addition to his musical mastery, he cultivated highly stimulating encounters with philosophers, writers, poets, painters, stage producers and architects creating a sumptuous network of cultural and artistic rhizomes. If a deep understanding of Nono’s music necessarily implies a thorough study of his compositional techniques, it is also equally important, on the other hand, to situate, identify and explore in depth his manifold interests and encounters. This Symposium aims to stimulate a broader discourse on three fields of the utmost relevance within Nono’s oeuvre: scenic conceptions and collaborations with stage producers, his relation to poetry and poets as well as his interest on Architecture.
