Visit by Tiago Viana de Freitas, visiting researcher at CESEM, to the Sociedade Filarmónica União e Capricho Olivalense

On January 16, the visiting researcher from CESEM – NOVA FCSH, Tiago Viana de Freitas (Early Music Studies Group), visited the Sociedade Filarmónica União e Capricho Olivalense (SFUCO), the oldest civil band in the city of Lisbon in uninterrupted activity, founded on June 1, 1886, and based in the parish of Olivais.

In addition to learning about the band’s history and attending a rehearsal, one of the objectives of the visit was to instigate dialogue between the philharmonic bands of Lisbon and the city of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, with the aim of exchanging experiences and repertoire, and discussing preservation policies, teaching methodologies, among other issues that could strengthen cooperation between Portuguese and Brazilian philharmonic bands. This dialogue, which is beginning between the Sociedade Filarmónica União e Capricho Olivalence (1886) and the Banda Euterpe Cachoeirense (1856), may expand to other philharmonic bands in the future.

The visit was attended by, from right to left, second secretary Nuno Miguel Faro Gomes, conductor Luís Filipe Henriques Ferreira, the aforementioned researcher Tiago Viana de Freitas, and vice-president Jorge Alberto Ribeiro Nunes.
