Lectures by Haig Utidjian (EMS) I Activity February – October 2026
On March 19 at 7 p.m. (CET), the conference Նախնիք եւ խազերը [‘Our ancestors and neumes’] will be presented online in the Digital Auditorium of the Aztag Daily Newspaper. The lecture by Haig Utidjian, a researcher from the Early Music Studies Group, will be delivered in Western Armenian and will provide a historical overview of the use of medieval Armenian neumes and other musical notation systems — including Byzantine neumes and hybrid systems — by Armenian ecclesiastical musicians over the centuries, until the adoption of the Limonchean system and Western musical notation in the 19th century. The dynamic relationship between oral transmission and written record will also be explored.
On February 26, the researcher gave another hybrid public lecture (in person and online) entitled Velký pátek v arménské liturgie [‘Good Friday in the Armenian Liturgy’]. Further lectures are planned for May at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (New York), in June in Lisbon, and in early October in Boston.
