PhD in Music – Artistic Practices in the Portuguese Context (ESMAE & CESEM)
Accredited by A3ES for six years (the maximum period), the PhD in Music – Artistic Practices in the Portuguese Context is structured around a dual commitment: it promotes direct links with the professional sector, integrating PhD students into real contexts of music production, and places Portuguese musical heritage at the centre of creative activity.
The programme takes a comprehensive view of Portuguese Musical Heritage: not only the repertoire of Portuguese authors, but all musical practices developed in a Portuguese context – from historical interpretation to contemporary performance, from composition and improvisation to sound experimentation and production. What is created, interpreted and researched in Portugal, regardless of the origin of the repertoire, is part of the living heritage of our musical culture.
The programme is the result of a strategic partnership between ESMAE and CESEM, scheduled to begin in the 2026/2027 academic year.
