“What is an instrument?”. Artistic Residency in Sound Art with Ângela da Ponte (CM)

The artistic residencies of the Master in Arts of Sound and Image aim to be a way to stimulate the development of research projects in the areas of sound and image, through the collaboration between students and invited artists. They are a joint proposal of MASI_ESAD.CR and the Cultural Association Osso. Three residencies will be held at the OSSO facilities in the village of S. Gregório, in the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, in April and May 2026, involving students from the master in arts of sound and image, teachers, guest artists and participants from the local community.

Starting from the region’s traditional instruments, this proposal raises the question: “what is an instrument?”, and how an object bearing cultural identity can merge with other contexts or be reintegrated into a different environment. Does it lose its sonic identity?

This residency features contributions from Ângela da Ponte (Research Group on Contemporary Music), António Júlio Duarte, Tiago Hespanha, Emanuel Brás, Diogo Saldanha, Pedro Letria, Riccardo Wanke, Susana Duarte, Luís Miguel Correia, Maria Mire and Suse Ribeiro. Further information here.
