Presentation of the book “Mozart’s Requiem: A Cultural History”

To better understand Mozart’s music today, two historiographical tasks seem essential: first, to situate the composer’s work in the culture of his time, that is, at the end of the Enlightenment; second, to consider the relationship between certain aspects of his compositions and the aesthetics of early German Romanticism.
This approach is particularly relevant in the study of Mozart’s Requiem, whose history is not only fascinating, rich and complex, but also full of mirages, pitfalls and misunderstandings. Miguel Ángel Marín analyses and explains them masterfully, in order to clear the way for understanding the impact that listening to the Requiem had in Spain (and in some parts of Latin America) throughout the 19th century.
It is an exhaustive, lucid and enjoyable study of one of the few compositions that has achieved universal popularity in the millennial history of music.
