Workshop “Introdução à Música Carnática”

09/11/2017 @ 14:00 - 16:30 WET

The expression carnatic music comes from the words “Karneshu atati iti karnataha”, which in Sanskrit means “Any song that pleases your ears”. Carnatic music is a musical genre belonging to classical music from South India with an ancient oral tradition linked to science, dance, theater, religion and philosophy. Due to its expressiveness and melodic and rhythmic variety, its practice is a complementary resource for musicians from different cultures, allowing the development of several important elements such as the notion of time, tuning, auditory training, creativity and spirituality.

This workshop intends to make the carnatic song known in an experiential way, exploring the ragas and talas. The study of ragas will be carried out through musical exercises of traditional training established since the 15th century by Purandara Dasa, starting from raga chants Maya Malava Gowla sung to the rhythm marked with the hands in the tala called Adi Talam. The study of the talas will be performed through the konnakol with the Indian vocalization of the rhythmic figures and the exposure of the tala with specific hand movements.
