Manuel Emílio Porto (1935–2012), a composer, priest, teacher and Member of Parliament, born in Ribeirinha on the island of Pico, led a life marked by intense musical activity, centred on the composition and arrangement of traditional and sacred pieces, and on conducting choirs and philharmonic orchestras. A prominent figure in the Portuguese music scene, particularly in the Azores, in the realm of popular music, for the songs he composed and reworked, for the many others he harmonised, and also for the choral groups he founded and conducted throughout his life.

The artistic scope of conductor Manuel Emílio Porto is evident both in the music that brought to life the choral concerts he conducted in the Azores, mainland Portugal, Galicia and Canada, and in his discography, which consists mainly of Azorean folk music, but also includes new Azorean music – with a particular focus on sacred music – as well as the works of other composers such as Zeca Afonso.

From all his artistic activity, a collection has been formed comprising sheet music, recordings and various writings, kept at his own home, and after his death, for lack of a suitable space, stored in the new family home.

This database is the result of a cooperation agreement between CESEM and Dr Maria de Jesus Maciel, who is responsible for the musician’s estate. Aimed at identifying, cataloguing, studying and preserving the rich legacy of Manuel Emílio Porto, it seeks to ensure its proper description and public accessibility, as well as to promote the musical heritage of the Azores.
