Online Summer School Course – “Musical Representation, Gender Identity, and Sexuality” by André Malhado

“Musical Representation, Gender Identity, and Sexuality”. This course, offered by the Summer School at NOVA FCSH, falls under the Thematic Line of Gender Studies and Music (NEGEM) at CESEM. The course aims to reflect on the role of sound and music in the social construction of gender identities and sexual orientations; use theories from queer and gender studies to interpret various artistic languages, styles, musical genres, and forms of cultural expression; critically and creatively question artistic works by exploring their conventions and social expectations resulting from the discursive intersections between music, gender, and sexuality; and develop audiovisual analysis skills that can be applied to other contexts where music expresses and/or represents identity.
