MedRen 2024 – Musical Iconography Thematic Line
From June 6th to 9th, the MedRen – Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference will take place in Granada. The CESEM’s Musical Iconography Thematic Line will be represented with a panel titled “Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Posterity: Musical-Iconographic Vibrations in Art and Music in Portugal”. This thematic session addresses various studies on musical iconography in Portugal during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the impact of these models in later periods. Firstly, L. Rocha and L. Sousa revisit the important 15th-century manuscript, the Crónica Geral de Espanha, presenting a new reading with new interpretative data. C. Sousa, in a pioneering study in Portugal on musical iconography in tapestry, analyzes scenes of war, musical instruments, and the transition of these models to a later historical period (the Baroque), in which the preferred artistic medium of the time was the ceramic tile. S. Duarte analyzes studies of painting in Portugal, specifically portraits and cryptoportraits, focusing on gender issues and the subsequent reuse of models. L. Castilho analyzes a case study from the interior of the country, an iconographic appropriation of Renaissance models for the composition of musician angels on a church ceiling. In this way, the aim is to better understand the musical iconography of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Portugal, as well as its vibrations in future artistic periods.
