The liturgical music in the Portuguese sources (1100-1650): networks of creation and diffusion of the repertories inside the Iberian Peninsula

Abstract

This project, based on the study of liturgical and musical sources (manuscripts and printed books) kept in the Portuguese libraries (1100-1650), goes beyond current approach in that (1) its aim is to compare these books with the Spanish and French ones in order to clarify the process of penetration of the Romano-Frankish chant, the large networks of circulation and the centers of influence, and (2) this is seen a dynamic process over several centuries. In order to facilitate the comparison, I will particularly insist on musical notations, new offices, calendars, the responsorial and the sanctoral. Acknowledging the fact that we deal here with a complex and polymorph phenomenon, I will link the facts of the musical sources with a historical documentation dealing with the political and religious stakes. This project will be leaned back against the Portuguese Early Music Database and will bring out its data and exploit its possibilities.
