Premiere of the opera “Retourning” by João Quinteiro – 31st May, 1st and 2nd June
May 31 - June 2
“All roads lead to the night, to its snare of stars and twilight.”
A Mythological time gradually spills over the invisible everyday life. Five tangential characters inhabit a Lisbon made up of interstices and dazzle. They cross paths, but barely see each other. The Dawns follow one another, between nooks and crannies and cliffs, like the tides, repeating every gesture for a long time.
At Cais do Sodré, Eurydice leaves a nightclub, takes the subway and heads for Sete Rios, where Orpheus waits anxiously. Eurydice is free and wants, more than anything, to be able to want.
It’s seven in the morning and the fear of the unknown, like a snake, lurks among the shadows along the River Pineios, whose slow flow is a harbinger of Eurydice’s journey to the underworld.
Through a window in Mouraria, Penelope gazes at the Tagus and waits. In Ithaca, the horizon contains the infinity of an absent Ulysses, who “has been away for many years”, perhaps he will return.
Like yesterday, it’s noon again and Penelope is waiting.
Sisyphus is driving a garbage truck and “is already counting the days until he retires”. In the distance, only the memory of the Gulf of Corinth remains, like a routine, a circular pile of garbage that rises and falls again and again.
At the intersection of Av. de Berna and Av. 5 de Outubro, Hermes feels “the deepest wound”. It’s nine o’clock, but time has shattered the illusion that the past is moving forward. “They say he was going too fast”. Hermes didn’t see the red light and now contemplates the silence, lying in the ambulance. The sun rises on Mount Kyllini, Hermes’ dreams are scattered across the tarmac like a fragile boat crossing the Aegean Sea.
Prometheus “mistook alcohol for the fire of the Gods”. He wanders around at night because neckties disgust him. In a tavern in Graça, “cirrhosis has long since devoured his liver, meticulously and faithfully.” The Caucasus Mountain stretches across the horizon, as Homer gets off the train in Santa Apolónia.
