International seminar ‘Women Musicians in Europe: Circulation, Mobility and Gender’

January 17 - May 16

In this seminar, we will look at the careers of female musicians and personalities from a broad range of historical, geographical, and socio-political contexts from the 14th century to the present. The objective is to examine the non-linear paths of these women and their relationship to social mobility, status search, and posthumous recognition. How have the careers of these female musicians been redefined, with most of them evolving in conditions often unfavorable to official recognition? What impact did these changes have on the music itself, musical practices, and the future of their works? The sessions will cover various geographical and cultural areas, including France, Italy, and Portugal, as well as popular and contemporary music. Particular attention will be paid to gender, transition and mobility, migration, exile, mobilization, globalization, memory, and resilience, offering fresh perspectives on these topics.

If you would like to attend the event remotely, please contact Kristin Hoefener (khoefener@fcsh.unl.pt), one of the organisers of this international event. In addition to the researcher from the Early Music Studies Group, who is also responsible for the paper on April 11, CESEM will be represented by Jelena Novak, a member of the Research Group for the Study of Music, Critical Theory and Communication, whose session is on for May 16.
