Carlos Sánchez Leonardo began his musical studies at the ‘Padre Antonio Soler’ and ‘Arturo Soria’ conservatories in Madrid, then went on to study with Pedro Sousa Silva at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE). He has a degree in recorder from ESMAE, a master’s degree in historical musicology from the University of La Rioja, and a master’s degree in artistic interpretation from ESMAE, finishing this course in 2021 with the highest classification. He is currently studying for a PhD in Humanities at the University of La Rioja.
He has received lessons from flautists such as Luis Beduschi, Vicente Parilla, Susanna Borsch, Pedro Sousa Silva, Fernando Paz, Michael Schneider, Jostein Gundersen and Wilbert Hazelzet. He has also received historical interpretation lessons from renowned musicians such as Carlos Mena, Markus Hünninger and Hiro Kurosaki. He took part in projects such as Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the recording of the album ‘Pleiades’ with the Portuguese Guitar and Mandolin Orchestra and the albums ‘In Splendoribus’, ‘Missa Beata Maria’ and ‘A música segreda de V.Lusitano’ with the Portuguese group Arte Minima and ‘Ad Tenebras’ with the Capella Sanctae Crucis. He has taken part in festivals in Spain and Portugal such as ‘Musicordia’, ‘Quatro mãos’, ‘Mundos e Fundos’, ‘Quintas no conservatório de Coimbra’, ‘ERTA Ibéria’, ‘Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro de Madrid (FIAS)’, ‘Semana de la Música Religiosa de Cuenca’, “Semana de la música antigua de Getafe”, “Festival de Música Antigua de Medinaceli”, “II Semana de la Música de Guadalix de la Sierra” or “Ciclo de la Capilla de Abantos” in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid). He received a research grant from CESEM-P.Porto to explore musical learning methods in the 16th century. He is currently taking part in the project ‘Towards an Anthology of Portuguese Renaissance Music’, supported by the Creative Europe programme.
