Biography
Ricardo Antão is active both as a performer and as a teacher. He is Assistant Professor at the Higher School of Music and Performing Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ESMAE-IPP), Auxiliar Professor at the University of Aveiro and teacher at the Jobra Conservatory of Music. He is frequently invited as a guest artist/clinician in Portugal, and was invited to teach and perform at SliderAsia Music Festival in Hong Kong (2017) and to give a masterclass at the Euphonium Academy “Vicente Costa”, in Valencia, Spain (2023). Ricardo is one of the leading proponents of the euphonium in his native Portugal. In high demand as a soloist and as a chamber musician, Ricardo is a founding member of projects such as Portuguese Tuba Ensemble How Low Can You Go?, DualSim, Trítono, BlindDuo, Dual Soundway, NoMad Duo and Aestuarium Ensemble.

An advocate for new music, Ricardo Antão has premiered works from Daniel Moreira, Daniel Martinho, André M. Santos, Daniel Schvetz, Filipe Lopes, Bruno Ferreira, Alexandre Almeida, Bernardo Lima, Samuel Pascoal, Marco Alves, Paulo Bastos, Álvaro Valente da Silva, Francisco Ribeiro and Matthew Murchison. He also plays regularly with Orchestras and Ensembles, including Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Tonkünstler Orchestra, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, 21st Century Orchestra, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa, Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, Camerata Nov’Arte, Mr. SC and the Wild Bones Gang and Estarreja Jazz Orchestra.

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree with distinction at ESMAE, he continued his studies at Bern University of Arts, in the class of Thomas Rüedi, where he obtained a master’s degree in Music Performance. Ricardo also holds a master’s degree in trombone (ESMAE), a master’s degree in Music Pedagogy (University of Aveiro) and a PhD in Music (University of Évora).
