Gonçalo Moreira
Gonçalo is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Musical Sciences at the Department of Musical Sciences, School of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH), NOVA University of Lisbon (UNL), and he is a researcher in training at the Center for the Study of Musical Sociology and Aesthetics (CESEM). His research is focused on the relationship between Gendlin’s practice of Focusing and music creation. Prior to becoming a Ph.D. student, he completed a B.A. in jazz piano performance, an M.A. in jazz piano performance and an M.A. in jazz piano pedagogy, having presented his research at both national and international conferences.
Gonçalo has 10 years of experience as a music teacher, having taught piano, harmony, improvisation, ear training, jazz combo and music theory at several private and public schools and conservatories. Additionally, he has run several masterclasses and workshops on jazz piano and improvisation. As a performer, Gonçalo has played with various bands, including Gonçalo Moreira Quintet, Michael Laurent & The Groove Merchants, Nuno Ferreira Septet, Matosinhos Big Band, João Mortágua – Janela, and Mané Fernandes – The Mantra of the pHat-Lotus. Additionally, he has recorded nine albums with several bands, including Mané Fernandes – BounceLab, Alexandre Coelho Quartet, Bruma Project and Susana China. He has been awarded three prizes for his musical accomplishments: Festa do Jazz Prize – Best Combo (2008), Young Musician’s Prize – Jazz Combo (2nd place) (2011), and RTP/Festa do Jazz Prize – Best New Band (2017).
