Gonçalo Nuno Baptista Moreira

Gonçalo is currently a PhD candidate in Musical Sciences at the Department of Musical Sciences of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH) at NOVA University of Lisbon (UNL), and a researcher in training at the Centre for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM). His research focuses on the relationship between Gendlin’s Focusing practice and musical creation. Before becoming a PhD student, he completed a bachelor’s degree in jazz piano, a master’s degree in jazz piano, and a master’s degree in jazz piano pedagogy, having presented his research at national and international conferences.

Gonçalo has 10 years of experience as a music teacher, having taught piano, harmony, improvisation, ear training, jazz combo, and music theory in various private and public schools and conservatories. In addition, he has conducted several masterclasses and workshops on jazz piano and improvisation. As a performer, Gonçalo has played with several bands, including Gonçalo Moreira Quintet, Michael Laurent & The Groove Merchants, Nuno Ferreira Septet, Matosinhos Big Band, João Mortágua – Janela, and Mané Fernandes – The Mantra of the pHat-Lotus. He has also recorded nine albums with various bands, including Mané Fernandes – BounceLab, Alexandre Coelho Quarteto, Bruma Project, and Susana China. He has been awarded three prizes for his musical achievements: Festa do Jazz Award – Best Combo (2008), Young Musicians Award – Jazz Combo (2nd place) (2011), and RTP/Festa do Jazz Award – Best New Band (2017).
