Biography

Luís M. Santos holds a Ph.D. in Musicology (2024) from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), supported by a Doctoral Grant from the FCT | Foundation for Science and Technology. His dissertation, supervised by Paulo Ferreira de Castro, focuses on symphonic music in Lisbon between 1910 and 1933. He completed his Piano studies at the National Conservatory of Lisbon (2006) and earned both his BA in Musicology (2007) and his MA in Historical Musicology (2010) from NOVA FCSH. Since 2007, he has been a researcher at CESEM | Center for Music Studies (NOVA FCSH), where he held research fellowships (2007–2010; 2018–2021) and is currently a member of the Research Group in Critical Theory and Communication. He was awarded the 2016 Joaquim de Vasconcelos Prize by SPIM | Portuguese Society for Music Research and the 2nd Prize in the 2025 Otto Mayer-Serra Competition at the University of California, Riverside. Since 2010, he has regularly collaborated with Casa da Música (Porto), the São Carlos Opera House, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, authoring musicological texts. Additionally, since 2013, he has served as a guest lecturer with the Department of Musicology at NOVA FCSH.
