Biography

LUÍS MIGUEL SANTOS is a Ph.D. Candidate in Musicology at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon, having been awarded a Doctoral Grant by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. His research, supervised by Prof. Dr. Paulo Ferreira de Castro, is focused on symphonic music in Lisbon during the period 1910-1933. He studied at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, having concluded the Piano Course (2006), and graduated in Musicology from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon (2007). In 2010 he obtained, in the same university, the Master of Arts degree in Musicology, with a thesis entitled ‘The Ideology of Progress in the Discourse of Ernesto Vieira and Júlio Neuparth (1880-1919)’. Since 2007, he is a Collaborator at the CESEM | Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music, based at the NOVA University in Lisbon. In this context, he was, from 2007 to 2010, a research fellow in the project “The Teatro de S. Carlos: Performing Arts in Portugal”, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and currently is a member of the Research Group in Critical Theory and Communication. He also works regularly as program annotator for the Oporto’s Casa da Música, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
