Pedro Gazalho Martins

Music teacher, composer, and musicologist, he teaches Music Theory, Choir, and History of Culture and the Arts at the Castelo Branco Regional Conservatory and the Professional School of the Castelo Branco Conservatory. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music and Musicology, specializing in Musicology, at the University of Évora, where his research focuses on the pedagogy and didactics of Music History. He holds a Master’s degree in Music Education (Music Theory and Ensemble Performance) from ESART–IPCB, a Bachelor’s degree in Musicology, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Musical Arts from NOVA University Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH).

He is a collaborator of the Contemporary Music Research Group at the CESEM, where he develops projects in music creation and music pedagogy. His main research interests include music pedagogy, technological innovation, and active learning methodologies in specialised music education, with a particular focus on Music Theory and Music History. His work also encompasses musical creation, composition, and analysis for the performing and audiovisual arts, particularly musical theatre and film.

He completed his master’s dissertation entitled Musical Theatre as a Vehicle for Learning in Music Education: Music Theory. He also collaborated in the research of the musical archives of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, contributing to the publication of the book Music at D. Maria II, and participated in the Sanfona project, both under the supervision of Professor David Cranmer.

He is the author of the book chapter Learning Music Theory through Musical Theatre during a Pandemic, published by Springer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he created a YouTube-based educational music video programme aimed at preschool and primary school students. Since 2017, he has conceived and developed original musical theatre and children’s opera projects within both general and specialised music education.
