Artistic experience with Jorge Graça (Education and Human Development Group)
Imaginary Sound Cartography (in Portuguese, Cartografia Sonora Imaginária, CSI) is an artistic experience that seeks to transport the viewer to a ‘world’ where music and image merge in a discourse of memories, reminiscences, reverberations, speculations, provocations that are ‘constructed’ while living and in real time, on a stage that is more than that: a window, a viewpoint, a telescope, a microphone, a resonance camera, a scrutinising brush.
The concept of ‘landscape’ serves as a conceptual starting point, but the proposal is not to replicate or evoke reality, either in terms of sound or imagery. On the contrary, the aim is to create an abstract “sonovision” that wanders between textures, in a search for coherent but deeply subjective relationships. A poetic exercise, with ‘feet on the ground and head in the clouds’ or perhaps the other way around. In several of Companhia de Música Teatral’s previous works, the concept of “soundscape” was revisited and paths were explored that led to an idea of a comprehensive artistic experience, anchored in a notion of music that defies “categorisation” and refuses to be trapped in “gender issues”. CSI is a natural step in this process of artistic research, which this time focuses on sound and image, and therefore differs from other works where movement and staging play decisive roles.
CSI is organised as a set of autonomous “pictures” or “maps”, each with its own identity but whose realisation is unique because it is based on what the performers feel, hear and observe during the act of “sketching” these “imaginary places”.
