Conference: «Music, science and art: about Vincenzo Galilei» On the 500th anniversary of the father of Galileu Galilei by Manuel Pedro Ferreira.

Vincenzo Galilei (1520-1591) is a pivotal character: uniting practical and theoretical knowledge in music, he inherits a powerful intellectual tradition, in which university education, largely based on the ancient synthesis of Boethius, faced new demands and questions, partly collected in the new treatise; at the same time, the humanistic rhetorical paradigm was beginning to supplant the mathematical paradigm through which music had been affirming itself in cultural consciousness for centuries. Galilei will play a central role both in the reemergence of the experimental, quantitative method, and in the affirmation of a new humanistic academism, inspired by Ancient Greece, which will eventually have the invention of opera.
