On 29 April 2005, Othaniel Pereira de Alcântara Júnior obtained his Master’s degree in Music – in the area of Music, Creation and Musical Expression – from the School of Music and Performing Arts of the Federal University of Goiás (EMAC/UFG), under the supervision of Professor Glacy Antunes de Oliveira. On that date, he presented a recital of Chamber Music (violin and piano), accompanied by the award-winning Brazilian pianist Luiz Medalha Filho, in addition to giving an oral presentation of his dissertation entitled ‘A Critical Edition of the Sonata for Violin and Piano in E Major, Op.36, by Henrique Oswald’ (400 p.). At the same institution of higher education, he graduated in violin in December 1989, in the class of Professor Crundwald Costa. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Faculdade Anhanguera de Ciências Humanas, now Uni-Anhanguera de Goiânia (1988). He was a violinist with the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra (1981 to 1991). Since 1991 he has been a professor at EMAC/UFG with experience in subjects such as Instrument/Violin, History of Music, Music Appreciation, Literature and Repertoire for Strings, as well as coordinating Chamber Music. At this institution he directed the Pre-Graduate Courses (1994 to 1996), coordinated the School’s Chamber Orchestra (1990s), as well as the Bachelor’s Degree Course in Music Therapy (1999-2004). Also at the Federal University of Goiás, between 2008 and 2015, he chaired the committee responsible for drawing up, applying and correcting the specific music tests for the entrance exams to the bachelor’s and licentiate’s programmes in Music and Music Therapy. He is also the music editor and music columnist for the newspaper ‘A Redação’ (online). Between 2013 and 2015, he was a member of the Cultural Projects Commission of the Culture Council of the municipality of Goiânia and, in 2015, he was elected a member of the Culture Council of the State of Goiás.
