Music in the Modern Period

Coordinator: Marco Brescia
Co-Coordinator: Luzia Aurora Rocha

The Music in the Modern Period Group is dedicated to a wide range of areas and issues related to music between the 18th and 20th centuries, with a particular focus on music produced in Portugal and its ramifications in Mediterranean and Atlantic Europe, and in Brazil, considering the production, performance and reception of music. The GMPM carries out a wide range of research within the general framework of historical musicology, organising, inventorying and cataloguing collections, producing critical editions, studying repertoire and music-related institutions, music criticism, organology, instrument makers, performers, historical musical practices, musical iconography, etc., always in the light of their historical and socio-cultural context. The themes of many of the projects developed within the GMPM, both collective and individual, fall naturally within CESEM’s thematic lines Opera Studies, Luso-Brazilian Studies and Musical Iconography. In addition to a significant body of peer-reviewed scientific publications by prestigious editorial boards, and the frequent participation of members of the group in the most renowned scientific events at national and world level, one of the strengths of the GMPM is the significant number of concerts performed nationally and internationally by several of its members, which exceed one hundred every year, fostering a healthy dialogue between musicology and musical practice.
