Biography

Researcher, composer and performer of acousmatic music, she holds a PhD in ‘Esthétique, Sciences et Technologies des Arts – Spécialité Musique’ from the University of Paris VIII, and a DEA (Diploma de Estudios Profundados) in ‘Artes de la Scène et du Spectacle – Option Musique ‘ from the same University. She is an assistant professor at the Department of Musical Sciences at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she coordinates the Master in Musical Arts. She is a researcher and member of the Board of the Center for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM), where she coordinates the Research Group on Contemporary Music, and directs the Laboratory of Musical Informatics (LIM) dedicated to research in Electroacoustic Music and the recently created Laboratory of Audio Preservation and Restoration (LaPRA). She is a member of the Coordinating Committee of the Scientific Council of the Associated Laboratory of the Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory (IN2PAST). She is a member of the Evaluation Committee for Music and Opera of the Direção Geral das Artes (DGArtes), Ministry of Culture of Portugal. Pires is also an Expert for the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education – A3ES. Moreover, she is member of the ‘Conseil de perfectionnement’ for the Master Course in ‘Acoustique et Musicologie’ de l’Université Aix -Marseille, France. In addition to her participation in several international events, she is also the founder of the Nova Contemporary Music Meeting International Conference (NCMM) as well as the Nova Contemporary Music Journal. She is currently co-director of the international magazine Filigrane: Musique, Esthétique, Sciences, Société (Delatour). IHer research focuses on the preservation of contemporary musical works, auditory cognitive perception and sound as a physical phenomenon in musical contexts. An expert in experimental and computer-assisted music, her work also focuses on musical analysis, electroacoustic music, composition and collaborative practices. Recently, her research has focused on the recovery and preservation of collections of Portuguese composers from the second half of the 20th century, as well as the digitization and restoration of audio documents inscribed on magnetic media. Having organized and chaired several important international conferences, as well as participating in international scientific meetings, she has produced a significant number of publications. Her musical works include instrumental music, acousmatic music, instrumental music with real-time electronics, and has been performed mainly in Europe.
