Biography

João Madureira was born in Lisbon in 1971. He studied composition with Christopher Bochmann and António Pinho Vargas at the Lisbon School of Music, and – with the support of the National Centre for Culture – completed a master’s degree in composition at the Cologne School of Music with York Höller. He was also a pupil of Franco Donatoni and Ivan Fedele. His works have been performed in England, Germany, Italy, France, Croatia, Spain and Portugal, by ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble L’Itinéraire (G. Bourgogne), Ensemble Neue Musik (P. Eötvös / J. Stockhammer), Orchestre lyrique de Région Avignon-Provence (S. Gualda), NRW Art Ensemble (M. Dobrowolny), Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orchestrutopica (Cesário Costa), Remix Ensemble (S. Ioannides), Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil and Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa. His music has also been performed by Nuno Vieira de Almeida, Sílvia Mateus, Luís Miguel Cintra, Jeff Cohen, Luís Madureira, João Vasco Almeida, Rui Baeta, Trevor Mctait, Angel Gimeno, among others. He has been commissioned by institutions such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Culturgest, Expo’98, Centro Cultural de Belém, IPPAR, Casa da Música, Teatro da Cornucópia, Teatro Nacional de São João / Companhia de Teatro .lilástico, Presidência da República Portuguesa, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and Miso Music Portugal. He has taken part in festivals such as the 100 Days Festival / Expo 98, the Mafra International Music Festival (1999 and 2004), the Strasbourg Music Festival (2001 and 2006), the Temps d’Images Festival (2004), the World Music Days festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music (Zagreb Biennale, 2005), the Musikfestspiele Dresden (2005), the Música Viva Festival (2006), and the Festival d’Automne in Paris (2006). In 1998 he was awarded the ACARTE / Maria Madalena Azeredo Perdigão Prize. In 2003 he was appointed resident composer at OrchestrUtopica. His works Rumour, Loop and Encounter have been published on CD. He teaches at the Lisbon School of Music and the Porto School of Music and Performing Arts.
