About:

The Whole Time is a collective dedicated to vocal improvisation in New York, consisting of Sofia Ribeiro, a Portuguese singer with nine edited albums and winner of several international jazz awards, the American Nick Demeris, TEDx speaker and resident artist at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, and the Portuguese Rizumik, 2012 American beatbox champion, who teaches alongside Bobby McFerrin at the Omega Institute. They give entirely improvised concerts, where a deep connection to the present moment leads them to create spontaneous songs, with melodies and rhythms of the most diverse musical styles, combining beatboxing and rapping in multiple languages.

Prices: 30 euros for the participants of the Circle Singing from 7/6/2017, 35 euros normal price with payment by MB, and 40 euros for normal price paid in cash on the same day.

Biographies:

SOFIA RIBEIRO (Portugal)

With little more than a decade of career, the Portuguese singer and songwriter Sofia Ribeiro has already established herself as one of the Portuguese voices with the greatest international projection. Known for her deep voice, enormous versatility and capacity for expression, Sofia immediately captivates each listener to her unique musical universe. He has already toured half a world, having performed in some of the most prestigious stages in Europe, the United States and South America, and there are several international awards that he has been accumulating, such as the first place in the ‘Crest Jazz Vocal’ (France) and in ‘Voicingers’ (Poland), and second place in ‘Young Jazz Singers’ (Belgium). She has nine records as a leader, gives voice and improvisation workshops at universities and schools across Europe, the United States and South America, and is a resident artist at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. She has a degree in jazz singing from ESMAE, where she later taught jazz singing classes. During her studies, she did one-year exchanges at ESMUC (Barcelona), and at the “Berklee College of Music”, Boston, where she was a student student of Bob Stoloff, and where she was offered the “Oliver Wagmann Memorial Scholarship” award, aimed at “ an extraordinary singer who achieved academic excellence in college ”. In 2009 she completed a master’s degree in jazz singing at the “Royal Conservatory of Brussels”, with “great distinction”. During her master’s studies she did an exchange at the prestigious “Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris” (CNSMDP). She completed both levels of the vocal technique course ‘Estill Voice Training Systems’. In 2002, Sofia started studying vocal improvisation with Rhiannon, a singer who is part of the group Voicestra, by Bobby McFerrin. In 2014 she completed her advanced course ‘All the way In’, and in 2016 she was invited to be her assistant for one year.

NICK DEMERIS (U.S.)

Nick Demeris is a singer, actor and teacher residing at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York. He studied, sang and taught with ten Grammy winner Bobby McFerrin (Do n’t Worry Be Happy). Nick travels frequently to universities, theaters, companies and cultural centers around the world, taking vocal improvisation, humor and rap with him. He played lead roles in Tony award-winning musicals, comedies and works by Shakespeare. He wrote, produced and performed original themes (music and scripts) for brands and organizations in the United States and Europe: Ogilvy, Spotify, Guild Mortgage, Accept Email, and composed for the famous children’s television program Rua Sésamo. Nick recently traveled to Nepal to work with children affected by the earthquake, using traditional country music to bond and link spiritual practices, cultural traditions and racial identities through music. Despite having toured countless countries singing, teaching and composing, Nick Demeris mainly celebrates the years he spent improvising on the streets and subway stations in Chicago and New York. RIZUMIK (Portugal)

Rizumik is an artist internationally recognized mainly for his rhythmic and improvisational skills. Born in Lisbon and resident in New York, he is connected to the performing arts through music, dance and movement, representation and teaching. In 2016, he was part of the group of teachers / assistants of the Circle Songs course led by Bobby McFerrin, at the Omega Institute (United States) and will be part again in 2017. He was the main actor in the renowned show The Voca People, having been in Off -Broadway for more than a year (West Side Theater and New World Stages), as well as with the international cast, by different countries. The production won the 2012 Lucile Lortel award for “Outstanding Alternative Theatrical Experience”, and was performed in shows such as “Live With Kelly”, “The Wendy Williams Show”, “MDA Telethon” and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon”. Rizumik is the American beatbox champion of 2012, and participated in three editions of the world beatbox championship in Berlin. In 2014, he was the main actor in an advertising campaign for Grand Marnier, filmed in Austin (Texas) and in 2008 he won the Young Creators music award (in Lisbon) with the vocal project aCorda. In 2017, he won the “Best Vocal Percussionist” award in the NY edition of the prestigious competition of A Cappella ‘Harmony Sweepstakes’.
