Since antiquity, literature and music have established close relationships. How writing a score can be equivalent to composing a literary text? Which writing techniques are shared between literature and music? This book seeks to provide answers to these questions based on the study of treatises on music, rhetoric, and poetics written in Portugal between the 17th and 19th centuries. From classical rhetoric to current intersemiotics, this comparative study allows us to understand how literature and music become close arts, looking, writing, and, above all, reading and listening to each other.
