Programme by Sara Maia (CTC) about the life and work of José Mário Branco

As a result of a scholarship provided by CESEM, where Sara Maia began to develop research in the José Mário Branco Archive, the collaborator from the Research Group for the Study of Music, Critical Theory and Communication has created a series of episodes dedicated to the life and work of José Mário Branco, for whom she has ‘personal affection’.

The series will not be organised chronologically but thematically, highlighting different facets of his work. The first episode will be dedicated to his creative process, revealing how he conceived and structured his compositions. The second part deals with his relationship with the theatre and shows how this intersection shaped his artistic identity. The third episode will pay special attention to his collaborations with other musicians, focusing on the album Cantigas do Maio by José Afonso, on which he took on the role of musical director. The fourth episode will explore his transnational experience, which was marked by his exile in France for 11 years. The final episode will focus on his return to Portugal after the 25 April Revolution and the music he created to accompany this period of transformation. In addition to these episodes, there will be a special segment dedicated to children and a second series of two episodes dealing with his relationship with cinema.
