Coralities: Wagner, Dramaturgy and Beyond
09/03/2023
The presence of the chorus in dramatic-musical works and its multiple functions are fundamental themes in the German reception of ancient Athenian dramaturgy. Within this reception, Richard Wagner takes central stage: while reappraising the model of Athenian dramaturgy, he transfers choral functions to the orchestra. In doing so, Richard Wagner points to new possibilities of understanding and performing choralities. In this lecture, we will examine the issue of choralities in Antiquity. Then we will discuss how such references were appropriated and transformed by Wagner, in his reinterpretations of Lessing, Schiller, and the spectacular model of grand opéra. Finally, I will discuss cases of choir formation and choralization in creative processes of the Dramaturgy Laboratory at the University of Brasília, from the Huguianas project.
