Sérgio Antônio Canedo

Graduated in Composition and Conducting – School of Music of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG-1986), under C. Guerra-Peixe (composition) and Maestro David Machado (conducting). Also studies with Oiliam Lanna, Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, Dante Grela, Eduardo Bértola, and Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca (choral cond). Master’s degree dissertation: Narration, Meter and Music in the Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM); Doctorate thesis: Forms and Formulas of Composition in the CSM, supervised by Dr. Ângela Vaz Leão at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. From 2003 to 2015, he was professor at the State University of MG (UEMG). Since 2015 serves as Adjunct Professor at the UFMG School of Music, where he coordinates the outreach project Baroque America (PROEX-UFMG). As conductor, he directed: Belo Horizonte Youth Orchestra (1984–87, 1990); Chamber Group of the Foundation for Artistic Education (1990); Tolima Symphony Orchestra, Colombia (1991). He also conducted the Orchestra of the 22nd Winter Festival (1990) and the SESIMINAS Orchestra (1994); Orchestra 415 (Ancient Music- 2017-2022). As composer, he participated in the Belo Horizonte Contemporary Music Cycle (1980-1990). He wrote the award-winning soundtrack for Elixir do Pajé (1989), and his piano piece Floral appears on the CD Composers of Belo Horizonte. CD: Contemporary Works for Orchestra with the UFMG Symphony Orchestra (2004). He coordinated the Brazilian Music Seminar at UEMG (2007–2011). He’s Artistic Director of Chorus Rosa Rosarum, dedicated to the CSM, that made a special CD in book Songs of Alfonso X to Saint Mary (Ed. O Lutador, 2011). Publications on the CSM include: Poetic Migrations in the CSM (2009), Music in the CSM (2011), Poetic-Musical Differentiations (2016), CSM: Some Musical-Poetic Procedures (2023), The CSM and the Relationship between Text and Music in the Middle Ages (2023), and Relationship between Music and Text in the CSM: Aspects (2025).
