Having graduated in Civil Engineering, Ana Maria Liberal went on to complete a postgraduate diploma in Piano and a PhD in History of Music at the University of Santiago de Compostela under the guidance of Professor Carlos Villanueva. Currently, Ana Maria Liberal teaches at the School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE-IPP) in Porto and is a fellow researcher with the CESEM of the Nova Lisbon University where she coordinates the IPP-CESEM centre. Her publications have included the editing of musical scores by Portuguese composers Eurico Tomás de Lima and Cláudio Carneiro and the book Club Portuense: Catalogue of the musical archives (Club Portuense, 2007). She is also co-author of the book A Musica de Junqueiro (Porto: Universidade Católica Portuguesa, 2009) and of the collection of three books Casas da Música no Porto (Palaces of Melody: an historical survey of music venues, in the English version, 2009-2011). Regularly she is invited to do pre-concert talks, to present concerts with the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto and to write program notes to Fundação Casa da Música. Her interests focused on the musical exchanges between Portugal, Europe and Brazil in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ana Maria Liberal is a member of the international research group Interdisciplinary Studies in Musical Sciences, housed at the University of Pelotas, Brazil and of Caravelas – Study Group for the History of Luso-Brazilian Music, housed at Nova Lisbon University, Portugal.
