Biography

Luís Candeias Mandacaru is a doctoral candidate in Historical Musicology at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, holding a research scholarship funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). He began his musical studies at the age of seven at the Sociedade Musical União Paredense and, at eleven, enrolled in the National Conservatory’s School of Music, where he completed the Basic Music Education in Trumpet. He later pursued Secondary Education in the Composition course at the same institution. In 2020, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Composition from the Lisbon College of Music (Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa), subsequently completing a Master’s degree in Music Education at the same institution in 2023. His academic research focuses on theoretical and historical perspectives of Electronic Dance Music and the figure of the DJ. In the artistic field, his work includes activity as a DJ and Electronic Dance Music producer with releases on various portuguese labels, and he also has a diverse artistic background in experimental and multidisciplinary contexts. He is the founder and a member of Markize, a collective established in 2023 that promotes artists within Lisbon’s independent electronic dance music scene.
