Paulo Castagna

Biography

Paulo Castagna holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (1982) and Music (1987) by the School of Communications and Arts (ECA) of the University of São Paulo (USP). He has Master’s degree also by ECA (1992) and Doctorate by Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (2000). He obtained scholarships of CNPq, Fapesp, Funarte and Fundação Vitae, producing collections of music scores, books and articles in the field of historical musicology, as well as courses, conferences, radio and television programs. He coordinated musicological researches and musical editions to recordings by several musical groups, such as Calíope (Rio de Janeiro), Brasilessentia (São Paulo), Ars Nova (Belo Horizonte), Vox Brasiliensis (São Paulo), Chorus and Orchestra of the International Festival of Early Music (Juiz de Fora), Les Solistes du Palais Royal (Paris) and Ex Cathedra (London). He is professor of the Art Institute of Unesp since 1994, contributor to the Music Museum of Mariana since 2001 and researcher of CNPq since 2007, working in the graduate program in music os UNESP, coordinating musicological projects in São Paulo and Minas Gerais and organizing meetings of musicology in several Brazilian cities. He coordinated several research projects, such as the Organization and Cataloguing of the Music Section of the Arquivo da Cúria Metropolitana de São Paulo, the project Patrimônio arquivístico-Musical Mineiro, which launched six volumes of brazilian music from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the project Acervo da Música Brasileira, which launched nine volumes and nine CDs of music from Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the digitization of the Collection Dom Oscar de Oliveira of the Music Museum of Mariana (MG).
