Author(s):
David Cranmer | Coordinator
The present volume brings together 26 chapters on the life and work of Marcos António Portugal (1762-1830), the Luso-Brazilian composer who, during his lifetime, achieved an international recognition that has yet to be equaled or surpassed. In an act of close collaboration, particularly between Portuguese and Brazilian experts, it aims to expose, demystify, and reassess this prominent figure, who has often been the subject of controversy. In fulfilling this task, in addition to providing an extensive, well-founded biographical text, it delves into a range of topics, including the international reception and dissemination of his theatrical works, aspects of various individual operas, secular occasional music, the contexts and popularity of certain religious works, modinhas, and the composer's educational activities as Master to Their Royal Highnesses, the children of King John VI and Queen Carlota Joaquina.
