David Cranmer

Biography:

Having settled in Portugal in 1981, the British musicologist and organist David Cranmer is currently assistant professor at the FCSH of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he teaches in the Musicology Department. He gained his doctorate at the University of London (1997) and is a member of CESEM, where he coordinates the research group “Music in the Modern Period” and the thematic strand “Luso-Brazilian Studies”. He is also responsible for the Marcos Portugal project and for the Caravelas Study Group. In recent years he has devoted himself particularly to research into aspects of opera and theatre music in Portugal and Brazil in the 18th and 19th centuries. Other research interests include music in Anglo-Portuguese cultural relations, and the life and work of Camille Saint-Saëns. He is co-author (with Manuel Carlos de Brito) of Crónicas da vida musical portuguesa na primeira metade do século XIX (1990) and (with Clement Laroy) of Musical openings (1992), and author of Laudate Domino: introdução à música sacra (2009) and of Música no D. Maria II: catálogo da coleção de partituras (2015). He is editor of Mozart, Marcos Portugal e o seu tempo/Mozart, Marcos Portugal and their time (2010), David Perez: Variazioni per mandolino (facsimile edition with introduction, 2011) and of Marcos Portugal: uma reavaliação (2012). He is also author of many book chapters and articles in Portuguese and international periodicals. He has spoken by invitation at scientific events in Portugal, Spain, France, England, Austria, Italy and Brazil. In Lisbon, he has been organist of the Anglican Church of Saint George since 1982, and has also given organ recitals in Portugal, France, England and Brazil. From 2011 to 2014 he participated regularly in concerts given by the “Academia dos Renascidos”. From 1997 to 2001 he was Artistic Director of the International Music Festival at Mafra.
