The work of Jorge Peixinho (1940-1995) has increasingly been appreciated and valued as one of the most important contributions to Portuguese art in the second half of the 20th century. As an introducer in Portugal of what was then called "avant-garde music," Jorge Peixinho was able to combine a constructive necessity—typical of his time—with an inalienable expressive spontaneity. A deep connoisseur of the various musical currents of post-war Europe, Jorge Peixinho always knew how to find his individual and specific path, continuously and indelibly marked by an ideal of great creative freedom. Spontaneity, enthusiasm, and the fundamental joy of making music—whether composing, performing, interpreting, or analyzing—are the qualities that best characterize his diverse musical activity. This volume gathers a selection of the papers presented at the international colloquium "Jorge Peixinho – Mémoires…Miroirs," organized by the Center for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics [CESEM] of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, in collaboration with the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Foundation/Culturgest, on October 8 and 9, 2010. Over two days, around thirty researchers, musicians, and musicologists discussed the music of Jorge Peixinho, opening new horizons for its understanding, documenting numerous specific aspects, and enhancing renewed analytical and interpretative approaches to his scores. Some of the papers were followed by extremely interesting discussion periods, which are transcribed here with minimal editorial intervention, aiming to retain the colloquial vivacity characteristic of such a context. Conceived as a starting point for new approaches, new reflections, and new studies on the work of Jorge Peixinho, this book is intended for all those interested in the music and arts of Portugal in the second half of the 20th century.
