Music and dancers: movements, mobility, resistance

This research seminar series is organized by Kristin Hoefener (CESEM – NOVA University of Lisbon) and Raphaëlle Legrand (IReMus).
Hosted by the GeMM and held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Salle Colette, 14:00 – 16:00), the series explores the movements, constraints, and forms of agency shaping the lives and practices of women musicians and dancers across periods and cultural contexts. Through focused case studies ranging from medieval minstrel women (Anne Ibos-Augé) to Afghan women musicians (Razia Sultanova), from the circulation of dancers between 1871 and 1914 (Hélène Marquié) to contemporary vocal practices in post-opera (Jelena Novak, CESEM), the seminars aim to foster dialogue across disciplines and historical frameworks. The series highlights circulation not only as mobility, but also as a site of negotiation, resistance, and creative strategy in women’s musical and choreographic histories.
