In the genesis of this book, there is a puzzle of partial investigations about S. João, having not yet managed to adjust all the pieces in order to provide a comprehensive overview of that past. Thus, it was not intended to write a history of this theater and of everything that took place in it, a task that would have required a broader team of researchers, especially for the area of the theater being recited. What we propose is only – and pragmatically – a set of views on aspects of theater life, seeking, through them, to rescue its history from the forgetfulness to which it has been voted. In view of the “liquid modernity” that the present offers us, with its consequent immediacy, it is intended, for now, to promote an interdisciplinary and scientifically updated reflection that, starting from the old Teatro de S. João, helps to contribute to reposition the culture theater and the performing arts at the forefront of our historical consciousness.

With this work, the foundations are finally laid for a history of the S. João Theater, the old and the new. If, in the etymological sense, the word “theater” designates a place to see, then this story will necessarily be a viewpoint, or an observation post. From it we can see not only two historic buildings, but also a theater and its city over more than two centuries, in the course of which everything changed – political regimes, machines, artistic manifestations, social relations, borders – except this amazing thing that is man.
