Biography

Born in Vale de Cambra, João Vilar is a composer, producer and performer, active in both the popular and Western art music realms.
He is currently enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Music (composition) at the University of Aveiro. He holds a degree (MA) in Composition from the School of Music and Performing Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. In addition, he holds a BA and an MA in Literature and Linguistics from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto.
His work as a researcher has taken a particular interest in the hybridist relations between Western art music and popular music, in popular music studies and in postmodern music.
His artistic activity reveals a similar profile: his musical style often positions itself on the frontier between the two musical traditions. His compositions include instrumental music for several kinds of formations – from soloist to orchestra –, electronic and acousmatic music and vocal music. In addition, he has worked extensively within the popular music realm, both in “band” and “solo” settings.
