Call for papers: Periodical press as a source in Musicology
II NEMI Meeting
Periodical press as a source in Musicology
16-17-18 May 2019
Call for papers
The Research Group for the Study of Music in the Press (NEMI-CESEM) is pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the international conference “II Jornadas NEMI – Periodical Press as a source in Musicology”, to be held in Lisbon, at NOVA FCSH, from 16 to 18 May 2019.
Music criticism, articles, news and publicity have been used as sources by music historians in reception studies, composers’ biographies and discourse studies, among others. These documents enclose knowledge about the musical life of a given place and time period and the agents (individuals or institutions) that participated in it. Thus, this conference intends to promote and discuss, from various perspectives, texts about music published in the periodical press from the 19th century onwards, as well as issues and methodologies of investigation and research.
Despite the focus on the periodical press, the organization commission also accepts reflections on sources from other media (for instance, studies about music criticism on television, radio and internet, such as social media, blogs and other platforms).
The organization commission encourages submissions within the following areas, although other topics are also welcome:
- Musicology and the periodical press;
- Music criticism and other texts about music in the periodical press;
- Musicians, composers, music critics, writers, journalists and other agents;
- Music and theatrical press, newspapers and magazines;
- Music and the public sphere;
- Archives and collections of periodicals;
- Methodologies of analysis of music criticism.
Proposals are limited to 20 minutes in length, allowing 10 minutes to questions and discussion. Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words and a short biography (ca. 150 words) on a separated document with indication of the institutional affiliation, if applicable. The abstract should not include any information about the author, only the title. The official
languages of the conference are Portuguese, English, French and Spanish. A selection of papers will be published in a miscellaneous volume.
All proposals should be submitted by email no later than 14 October 2018 to nemi.cesem@gmail.com. The scientific commission will make its final decision by the end of November 2018 and contributors will be informed immediately thereafter. Further information about the program and registration will be announced after that date. For any additional information, please contact: Mariana Calado or Isabel Pina, nemi.cesem@gmail.com
