Webinar: The Portuguese Bell Heritage
16/04/2021
The sounds of the bells are part of the cultural and sound landscape of several Portuguese cities that still keep these instruments active as part of their sound and artistic heritage. Through their ringtones, the bells have been responsible, since ancient times, for ordering the time, cheering the festivities, publicly communicating varied news, alerting to bad weather and fires, guaranteeing spiritual protection, weeping the dead, regulating work, helping difficult deliveries, among other functions. The daily life of cities was marked by the constant presence of a “brown sound”, organized through a sophisticated system of sound codes recognized by their inhabitants. The safeguarding of the important bell heritage, in Portuguese territory – in which bells dated since the 13th century are identified -, the preservation of knowledge related to the foundry practice, the relevance of the recovery and preservation of manual touches, the impact of mechanization, the appreciation of the bell-rider’s craft and the debate on Portuguese bell culture as material and immaterial heritage will be some of the topics addressed by experts invited in the webinar THE PATRIMÓNIO SINEIRO PORTUGUÊS, carried out by the project PASEV – Heritage of the Sound Landscape of Évora, from the University from Évora.
