The 4th NEGEM Symposium takes place on the 23rd and 24th of September in a hybrid setup, both in person (in the Colégio Almada Negreiros, room 219) and through Zoom. This year’s theme, Intersections, highlights the transformations and developments that have been made possible by applying the analytical lens of genre to various questions in the domain of the social sciences and humanities during the past decade: in other words, the perspective of genre as a tool to widen and revise narratives as well as dynamics of social stratification. The last NEGEM Symposium proved that this research cluster has invested its efforts in increasingly wide-ranging, diversified and interdisciplinary perspectives about genre and sexuality and its relationship with music as a cultural and social practice with specific discourses and representations situated in different historical and local contexts. In this respect, the 4th Symposium seeks a deeper understanding of intersectional aspects, of connections between various identity markers, and of their interaction with social and power dynamics in specific contexts. The notions of intersectionality and diversity are therefore present in a programme that avoids rigid demarcations and instead establishes a dynamic counterpoint between time periods, musical genres, performance practices, patterns of reception, mediation and discourse, and identity expressions, thus fostering networks of critical thinking. Discussions will touch on queer identities, musical practices undertaken by women, current day musical scenes guided by identity politics, life stories, and body transformations (be they organic or visual) in search of the perfect sound or simply of a way of being in the world. In addition, the relevance of conventions, stereotypes and models – and their dilution or subversion – will also be a point of discussion. The symposium brings together senior and junior researchers, students, performers, guests and members of NEGEM, in various formats such as panels, debates and roundtables. The participants include Afonso Mateus, Alannah Marie Haley, Alberto Pacheco, Al Soares, Ana Sofia Malheiro, André Malhado, Ângela Flores Baltazar, Beatriz Nunes, Bruno Martins, Eva Falcato, Filipa Magalhães, Francisco Oliveira, Francisco Pires, Isabel Pina, Joana Freitas, Jorge Balça, Júlia Durand, Luísa Cymbron, Maria José Artiaga, Matilde Palma, Paula Gomes-Ribeiro, Ricardo Pereira, Sérgio A. Vales and Sofia Lopes. The symposium is organised by NEGEM and CESEM – NOVA FCSH, and the scientific committee is formed by Alberto Pacheco, Mário Vieira de Carvalho and Paula Gomes Ribeiro. The event coordination is headed by Paula Gomes Ribeiro, and the organising committee is formed by André Malhado and Ana Sofia Malheiro. The programme will be released in the coming days, and the research cluster’s social network pages will be updated with more information.
