Celebration of 500 years since the death of Queen Leonor of Portugal (SCML/CESEM – NOVA FCSH)

Celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death of Queen Leonor of Portugal is to celebrate the achievements of the people. Our people. Leonor of Portugal ruled during four reigns and lived at the height of the Age of Discovery. She was the daughter-in-law of Afonso V (1432-1481), wife of King João II (1455-1495), sister of King Manuel I (1469-1521), and aunt of King João III (1502-1557). Leonor of Portugal represents the best the Avis dynasty had to offer. A political woman, entrepreneur of social causes, patron of culture, sensitive to all kinds of technological and civilisational innovations, Leonor was, above all, the mother of the Portuguese people. Even today, 500 years later, we still benefit from her vast legacy. These conferences, which will take place in the house she founded five centuries ago, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, aim to give us an overview of the state of the art of Leonorian studies, as well as to contribute to making the general public aware of the human dimension of this woman, her context and her daily life.
