«At the genesis of this book is a puzzle of partial investigations about the S. João, with not all the pieces yet fitting together to provide a comprehensive view of this past. The goal was not to write a history of this theater and everything that took place there—a task that would have required a larger team of researchers, especially for the area of declamatory theater. What we propose is merely—and pragmatically—a set of perspectives on aspects of the theater’s life, aiming through them to rescue its history from the oblivion to which it has been relegated. In the face of the "liquid modernity" that the present offers us, with its consequent immediacy, the intention is, for now, to promote an interdisciplinary and scientifically updated reflection that, starting from the old Teatro de S.
