Biography

Beatriz Silva holds a master’s degree in Intercultural Studies Portuguese-Chinese and a bachelor’s degree in Oriental Languages and Cultures, both from the University of Minho. She is currently a PhD candidate in Artistic Studies – Art and Mediations, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon, and is a member of the Music in the Modern Period Group – Thematic Line of Musical Iconography at the Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music (CESEM). Entitled “Singing the Revolution – The Role of Songs and Opera in the Dissemination of Communism in Mao Zedong’s China”, her research project has been the subject of publications in indexed scientific journals, such as “Música Hodie”, and participation as a speaker at national and international conferences in the field of Musicology and Chinese Studies.
Professionally, between 2018 and 2021, she worked on Chinese-Portuguese translation projects, while also teaching Mandarin and Chinese Culture at SPEAK on a voluntary basis.
In her youth, she attended singing classes with teachers Inês Villadelprat, Joana Pereira, and Sílvia Pinto and subsequently won first prizes in the Competition of Chinese Songs performed by Non-Natives, promoted by the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon (2018), and in the Artistic Project – Song Festival, organized by the Barcelos City Council in the same city (2019). She has been attending the Free Singing Course at the Viatodos Music Academy (Barcelos) since March 2023.
