Eborense version of Mozart’s Requiem released by Swedish publisher Wessmans

The Swedish publisher Wessmans has recently released an edition of Mozart’s Requiem prepared by CESEM (University of Évora) researchers Rodrigo Teodoro de Paula (Music in the Modern Period Group) and João Ricardo (Research Group on Contemporary Music).

This edition draws on 19th-century manuscripts preserved in the Évora Cathedral Archives and presents a version adapted for a reduced ensemble: four voices, an organ, two bassoons, a cello, and a double bass. The Évora version reflects the performance practices of Portuguese chapels during this period, particularly the use of the so-called “emancipated bass” technique for specific works. The publication also includes a foreword by Spanish musicologist Miguel Ángel Marín, as well as a short introductory essay on this unique version and the reception of Mozart’s famous Mass in Portugal during the 19th century.
