International Congress ‘Mozart and His Time’ I Proposals until November 15

The year 2026 will begin with the celebration of the 270th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), on January 27. Beyond being one of the most extraordinary composers of all time, universally regarded as a genius, Mozart also witnessed great changes in his era. The Congress “Mozart and His Time” aims not only to shed further light on the genius who gives it its name, but also to gain a deeper understanding of the era in which he lived. The keynote speakers will be Rui Vieira Nery, Rosana Marreco Brescia (Music in the Modern Period Group), and Simon Keefe. The official languages will be Portuguese and English.

Proposals are welcome on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • The life and works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart;
  • The life and works of other composers of the same period who Mozart may have influenced;
  • Political, social, and cultural transformations in the second half of the 18th century;
  • The impact of revolutions in the former colonies on European society;
  • The arts in Mozart’s lifetime in Central Europe (literature, painting, sculpture, architecture);
  • The role of women in opera and performance;
  • Libretti and musical representations reflecting the social changes of the period;
  • Artists’ struggles for social recognition and status;
  • Key moments that triggered social, political, philosophical, cultural, or artistic change (e.g., the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, the French Revolution).

Proposals should be sent as a Word or PDF document containing a title, a brief abstract (maximum 250 words), and the author’s name and affiliation to abeuvink@autonoma.pt by November 15, 2025.
