Claude Debussy, or the Reinvention of Music

19/12/2018 @ 18:30 - 20:30 WET

Marking the centenary of the death of composer Claude Debussy (1862-1918), the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian through  Gulbenkian Music, promotes a free course in three sessions, guided by the musicologist Paulo Ferreira de Castro (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities – New University of Lisbon ).

This course aims to provide insights for the audition and understanding of the musical production of the great French composer from the turn of the century to the twentieth century, through a contextualization of his life and work within the framework of the social and cultural movements of the Belle Époque, and in particular, explore the multiple interactions between music, drama, literature, fine arts and history of ideas using a wide range of audiovisual materials. The main objective of the course – including the analysis of such significant works as Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, Pelléas et Mélisande and La Mer – is thus to make known the deeply innovative character of the artistic creation in Debussy, and to reflect on his contribution to the reconfiguration of musical thought in the basis of modernist aesthetics.

Free course: type of activity for the adult public, without any type of specialization, specific training or academic degree
